Among the oldest and leading government institutions in our country, Ethiopia, the 81-year-old Civil Registration and Residency Service Agency, which was established in 1935, is the first. This institution has been providing services to foreign nationals including Ethiopians for the past years and has made many changes in its mission and organization. This ancient institution has been developed with technology and is introducing many new things in the country and is currently at an important stage. Although the work being done to build a modern and strong government system in Ethiopia using the civil registration system is still in its infancy, Addis Ababa is playing its leading role and is working to overcome the problems in the sector and become a city where a complete civil registration system is implemented in our continent within a few years. Since 2015, the Civil Registration and Residency Service Agency has been working on a service reform program focused on technology, operations, human resources, organization and creating a comfortable work environment to overcome the many complex problems that the Civil Registration and Residency Service Agency had. Currently, the agency is equipped with a modern data center (DC), technological infrastructure, highly sophisticated secret printing devices to prevent fake documents, security camera control system to make the service efficient, and human resources that can be managed. Addis Ababa has designed a strategy that will enable it to become a smart city. Making a city smart means simplifying the daily activities of city dwellers or life interaction in general, and this can be achieved when it is supported by technology, especially when it is possible to capture information by registering the resident through technology. For this reason, the birth registration system, which is currently the most important and current issue of the world, is the starting point for any legal identity management system. Mainly, to manage resources and prevent illegality, it is very necessary to coordinate with institutions through technology, and the role of this institution's information is important. In order to implement this, it is possible to take as an example the encouraging change brought about by creating technological coordination with the land system. In 2018, the institution will fully manage the civil registration system, organize and analyze registrations on a daily basis and provide helpful information for the city's social and economic decisions. By streamlining digital services, a system where residents can get services online without having to come to this facility to get any service will be realized in 2017.  A system will be developed to replace the City's Resident ID / RID / driver's license, transport service receipts and bank ATMs together and save resources from wastage. In addition to this, we are in the final phase of implementing the "Digital Kebele ID Application" where a mobile phone is used as an ID. Our agency is working to become a model institution with an ethical servant staff by establishing a strict prevention and action system against theft and illegality, and has plans to establish a center of excellence to share experience and research and provide short training. To achieve this and other plans, the management and the staff from the center to the district are ready more than ever i feel. A new chapter of Service with a new begining!
